Fly to Lalibela where 11 below-
ground churches  bear witness to the vision of a 12th-century king. Hewn from granite and embellished with windows, murals, and carvings, they tower up to 40 feet tall. Explore the first group of churches and spend the night at the Zagwe Hotel. meals b+l+d
DAY 6 | Rock-hewn churches Visit Yemrehanna Kristos, an
Axumite church that predates the nearby cave churches by nearly a century. Return to town and continue your exploration of Lalibela’s medieval cave churches. meals b+l+d

DAY 10 | Tribes of the Omo River’s eastern bank
Spend the day with Samrawit getting to know two tribes on the eastern bank of the Omo River. Numbering fewer than 2,000, the Karo are an agro-pastoralist society known for their highly- detailed body painting. Also on the eastern shores, the Hamer subsist with cattle herding and agriculture. Hamer men are celebrated for their traditional bull jumping, a rite of passage that is part of an event that can lastthreedays. mealsb+l+d
DAY 11 | Around Omorate Travel overland to Omorate, a
riverside town deep in the lower Omo Valley. Here along the river’s western bank, you’ll get to know the lives and customs of the eight different clans that comprise the Dassanech tribe. Continue to Jinka for a night at the Eco-Omo Safari Lodge. meals b+l+d
DAY 12 | Ways of the Mursi Meet the Mursi who adorn
themselves with paint, beads and body ornaments of horn and feather. The women wear large pottery or wood discs in their lower lips; the men are known for fierce ceremonial dueling. Then fly back to Addis Ababa and spend another night at the Radisson Blu Hotel. meals b+l+d
DAY 13 | Depart Addis Ababa After a leisurely morning, tour
the Ethnological Museum, set in Halie Selassie’s former palace. Then continue to the airport for your onward flight. meals b+l+d
