Eqip Sermia Glacier
for kaffemik, a Greenlandic tradition with coffee, cakes and conversation. Back onboard, we cruise as close as possible to the mighty face of the Eqip Sermia Glacier. This is one of the most active glaciers on Earth and we have a good chance to see it calving huge icebergs. meals b+l +d
DAY 5 | Ilulissat – The Iceberg Capital Embark on a thrilling boat expedition into
the Ilulissat Icefjord , filled with icebergs from the Sermeq Kujalleq Glacier. Calving at an amazing average rate of 82 feet each day, it’s one of the world’s fastest-moving and most productive. This glacier is also one of the few through which the Greenland ice cap, formed during the Quaternary Ice Age, reaches the sea – and some of the ice that surrounds us today is estimated to be 250,000 years old! Be sure to keep your eyes sharp: The skies and waters of the fjord are also home to a variety of sea birds including eider, auk, and guillemot. meals b+l+d
DAY 6 | Ashore in Itilleq
This morning you’ll wake to the picturesque
sight of Itilleq, its brightly painted homes clustered along the rocky shoreline. Situated a mile above the Arctic Circle, this remote island settlement is just half a mile off of Greenland’s western coast. Going ashore, you’ll gain an intimate firsthand look into the life of its 100 or so residents. Though smart phones and web-browsing are a part of everyday life here, customs and traditions remain strong. meals b+l+d
